Fluorescent Nucleic Acid and Protein Stains

Nucleic Acid Gel Stains

SYBR® Gold - the most sensitive, versatile fluorescent stain for all nucleic acids

Features:
  • the most sensitive (> 10 fold more sensitive than ethidium bromide) fluorescent stain available for detecting all nucleic acids (dsDNA, ssDNA, RNA) with standard ultraviolet transilluminators or with our Dark Reader™
  • stain and photograph even thick and high-percentage gels rapidly - no destaining or washing
  • use with all commercial gels is possible - no interference with Northern or Southern blotting
  • obtain linear signals over a broad dynamic range
  • the most cost-efficient solution to high-sensitivity detection

SYBR® Gold
SYBR® Gold vs. Silverstain Comparison of sensitivity achieved using (A) SYBR® Gold stain with 300 nm transillumination and (B) silver stain to detect double stranded DNA separated on native polyacrylamide gels.

Use of SYBR® Gold to detect single-strand conformation polymorphisms in exon 1 of human
K-ras.
for sensitive detection we recommend the dark reader

SYBR® Green I - sensitive fluorescent stain for selective detection of dsDNA

Features:
  • detects less than 20 pg dsDNA per band
  • bright green fluorescence with exceptionally low background
  • no destaining or washing steps
  • can be used with many different electrophoresis platforms
  • less expensive than silver staining

SYBR® Green I
A twofold dilution series of Hae III digested PhiX174 RF DNA that has been electrophoresed on a 5% polyacrylamide gel and then stained with the ultrasensitive SYBR® Green I nucleic acid gel stain.

SYBR® Green II
- highly sensitive dye for staining RNA in gels

Features:
  • high-sensitive staining of RNA in formaldehyde gels without the need for destaining
  • suited for DGGE and SSCP analysis - does not interfere with subsequent RNA transfer or blotting
  • very low background fluorescence
  • best dye for visualizing RNA with laser scanners
  • high quantum yield

Staining microarrays with SYBR® Green II dye

SYBR® Green II RNA gel stain

Left: Staining microarrays with SYBR® Green II dye. Right: A two-fold dilution series of Escherichia coli 16S and 23S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) that has been electrophoresed on a non-denaturing 1% agarose gel and then stained with SYBR® Green II RNA gel stain.
